If you want to subtract part of an existing selection, press and hold the Option key while starting the "deleted" area of the selection from outside the existing selection. Kicking off the latest Selections package is Polish producer Łukasz Szyda, better known to the world as Solar Energy, and on this particular occasion, Spiral Waves. His dreamy and melodic "Time Runs Too Fast" debuted on Global DJ Broadcast in February, and immediately became a fan favorite, winning the Global Selection accolade on the show in its first attempt. It has grown to become one of the staples of Markus' radio playlists, and has cemented itself as a Coldharbour anthem for some time to come. Next up are Los Angeles based duo Norin & Rad, who make their Coldharbour Recordings bow with "Always a New Day". Already causing quite a stir due to its appearance on Disc 1 of Markus' Las Vegas '10 compilation, the track received its fair share of airplay on GDJB also, with many projecting that these guys are one to watch for the future. And finally, two of Scotland's finest producers unite to deliver a beautiful slice of melodic progressive. Alan Nimmo, best known for his work as part of the Signalrunners, teams up with one of the outstanding producers over the past 12 months in the form of David Forbes to produce "Samui". Debuted by Markus Schulz in a high profile guestmix before the live proceedings of A State Of Trance 450 kicked off in Toronto, Samui has been a regular fixture on Global DJ Broadcast throughout April and May, and rounds off one of the strongest Selections packages to date. Three tracks debuted and built solely through Global DJ Broadcast support, and now all three stand as being among the most fondly remembered among Coldharbour followers in 2010. PHLEARN is having a Halloween Contest! https://goo.gl/AeS9Y4 How to Create Perfect Selections Using Channels in Photoshop Channels are a great way to make extremely accurate selections! Prepare to make magic happen- even with highly detailed line drawings! Although there are many different techniques that could yield similar results, Channels can provide the most accurate selections of all. Section 1: Making Selections To begin, click over to the Channels tab (if it is not showing up, go to Window - Channels). Since our image is black and white, we can use any of the Channels to get the selection we want (we use the Blue Channel for this particular example). However, this will change if your image is in color. Click on each Channel to see which selects the most of what you need, and then duplicate it by either Holding Cmd + J or dragging the Channel down to the new layer icon. Hold Ctrl/Cmd and click on the duplicate layer to create the selection. This selects the lightest areas, so if you need the dark areas selected simply go to Select - Inverse. Section 2: Adding Color to Selection With the selection active, create a new Solid Color Adjustment layer. This will automatically make a layer mask and fill the selection with whatever color you choose! That is why you can capture incredible detail with this method; it fills everything in seamlessly. Section 3: Design Details To begin really turning this into a piece of art, we crop the image into a square to give it some visual breathing room. Then, we start to play with color! We create another Solid Color Adjustment layer and place it underneath the illustration layer to act as the background. At this point, you should discover why this technique is so efficient: you can change the color of those color fill layers as much as you’d like! You can also have lots of fun playing with the styling of the image. We duplicate the layer of the wolf and move it up a bit, which gives a sort of screenprint effect. We then add a blue Color Fill layer on top of the already present orange layer. Then, we add a Gradient from black to transparent which acts as a mask for part of the color. The result is a beautiful fade from one color to another! And, as you already know, you can always go back in and adjust those colors. In this case we decide to stick with a cool palette, and use blue and green. For a final artistic touch, we create a white Color Fill copy of the wolf and scale it up (Cmd + T) as another layer of the background. You are able to see through it, but we lower the opacity even more so that the effect is nice and subtle. We end up with a beautiful graphic image by simply playing with Channels and colors!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for watching Phlearn! Make crazy selections no matter how precise they are using channels in Photoshop. In this video, we'll learn how to replace skies by utilizing channels for mask information and select detailed objects like grass and trees or even hair very simply. This method of making selections is like the last resort. When nothing works, be it "Select and Mask" or "Select Color Range", channels are powerful sources of creating masks to make that selection. This can be done by creating an alpha channel which is additional channel besides RGB or CMYK to hold complex masking information. Along the way, while we replace skies, we'll also look into some tips and tricks on matching the skies with the image. ► SUBSCRIBE: https://goo.gl/iaROYY If you think you can help, entertain or even disturb someone by sharing this channel's video. You can add to any selection using one of the Photoshop selection tools by pressing the Shift key. If you want to add extra area to an existing selection, you'll have to begin the "new" part of the selected area from within the existing selection. If you want to subtract part of an existing selection, press and hold the Option key while starting the "deleted" area of the selection from outside the existing selection. This is much more easily demonstrated than understood by reading text.

PHLEARN is having a Halloween Contest! https://goo.gl/AeS9Y4 If you would like more in-depth information on cutting out hair, check out our PRO Tutorial: http://phlearn.com/product/best-way-cut-hair ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pen Tool The pen tool can be very intimidating at first, but all it takes is a little practice and a lot of selecting! In today’s episode, we walk you through the pen tool in Photoshop. Starting with the Basics To start from the very beginning, it’s best to practice basic shapes. Select the pen tool from the toolbar (or press P). All you have to do is click to create the edges of your shape. After completing it, you will see a little O if you hover over the first point. You can then click on that first point to close the shape. To turn this into a selection, right click and go to “Make Selection.” Whenever you are working with the pen tool, it creates paths. This is why you don’t see your shape on a layer; it is stored in a different place. If you need to alter a selection, go to the Paths tab and click on the Work Path. From here, you can hold down CMD and click on any point to move it around. Magical tip: Hold ALT/OPT and click on a point to turn it from a curve to a straight line, and vice versa. The pen tool truly just takes some practice. Spend time playing around with shapes and anchor points! Pen Paths If you think about it, the simple shapes you can create from scratch with the pen tool are some of the same shapes that you might use to outline a figure- just simple curves and lines. When selecting an element in an image, apply the same basic pen tool techniques we just went over. It tends to help if you select just inside the edge of the figure (you can always refine that edge later). Don’t forget about the magical tip from before! If you need to create a sharp edge or change direction in your curve, hold the ALT/OPT key and alter the point. You can also hover over any point until you see a little minus symbol, and click to delete that point. The same works in the opposite direction if you need to add a point (you will see a little plus symbol). Once you are finished, be sure to close up your path by hovering over the first point and clicking it. Again, to create a selection from your path, right click and choose “Make Selection.” Cutting out subjects What happens if your subject is on a layer, but you can’t find your pen path? Don’t fret! Just click on the path tab (to the right of the channels tab). You can also go to Window — Paths, and the dialogue you need will pop up right away. Once your path is turned into a selection (right click to Make Selection, or hold CMD and click on the path thumbnail), it will be active on your layers. If you go back into your layers, you should see marching ants around the subject. Click on the layer mask icon and your selection will be cut out perfectly from the background. Voila! Then, create a new layer underneath your subject. You can fill it with any color that you’d like. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for watching our free Phlearn Tutorials! PHLEARN is having a Halloween Contest! https://goo.gl/AeS9Y4 OUR #1 PRO TUTORIAL EVER IS NOW ON SALE! https://phlearn.com/product/photoshop-101-301 When cutting out hair from a background, it is helpful to keep in mind that it’s much easier to use dark hair against a light background or light hair against a dark background. Selections To start, find the color channel which shows the maximum amount of contrast in the hair. Duplicate that channel and bring up the levels panel (CMD/CNTL + L). We can bring the black point up to create very intense contrast in the image. The darks should be extremely dark but be sure not to overdo it! A good way to check is if the edges of the hair look too coarse, you can decrease the darkness a little bit. All of this is done in the channels tab, but it needs to be turned into an actual usable selection. Hold CMD/CNTL and click on your channel copy. This selection will remain, and you are able to go back into the layers and edit from there. Click on the layer mask icon, and everything that was dark will turn invisible. All you have to do is invert the selection (CMD/CNTL + I). If parts of the image are transparent that shouldn’t be, you can paint over the layer mask where it needs to be filled in. To take care of fringing (light or white part around the edges of the hair), clipping masks will come in handy! -Create a new layer -Right click, and select “create clipping mask” -Use the brush tool or clone stamp tool to fill in the white areas Now, whatever work is done on that layer will only apply to the underlying layer. In other words, your new layer is clipped to what’s under it. Change the clipped layer from normal to darken- this will only effect the whitest part of the hair. Use the clone stamp tool to paint over the light parts of the hair. Today's tutorial looks at the Refine Edge feature in Photoshop, and how it can drastically improve your selections that contain hair and/or fur. Support my content: http://www.patreon.com/howardpinsky Tools used in this tutorial: Color Range: If you're looking to select all or most of a single color in your image, Color Range will help you do that. It lets you automatically target pure colors, or sample specific colors using the eye dropper. To add to your sample, hold down shift. To subtract, hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac). Pressing OK will create the selection. Refine Edge: When you initially create a selection, it's likely to be very sharp around the edges, and likely won't contain hair or fur. Refine Edge will allow you to not only soften out those edges, but you'll be able to use Smart Radius to grab hair and fur which may not have been selected.
